Honestly, a buddy of mine went to Malta for "just a summer" to brush up on his English, came back with an insane tan, a legit Cambridge certificate, and, uh, like 200 new Instagram followers who’re still messaging him in English. By the end, he was dropping "cheers" for "thanks" — which says a lot.

So, why is Malta so popular for English courses? The country itself is a blend of sun, epic history, and — believe it or not — English is an official language. The island vibes are real, but it’s also packed with seriously good language schools. There’s a huge mix of global students, the Mediterranean right at your feet, and it’s way less expensive than cities like London or Dublin. This lets you enjoy quality education and skip massive bills for lattes and study materials.

Someone once told me grabbing a pastizzi (that’s the local snack) after class actually helps you memorize grammar rules faster. It’s probably not scientific, but I totally buy it. The chilled-out, welcoming vibe seriously helps you keep practicing English everywhere. You’ll grab your morning coffee, strike up a chat at a bus stand, or join a party — all in English, surrounded by international friends.

If you’ve ever searched "learn English Malta" or "курсы английского на Мальте," you know there are endless choices — whether you’re a newbie, a business expert, a teacher, or just a teen after a unique vacation. Basically, Malta covers everyone.

Varieties of English courses in Malta

Time to see exactly what English courses you can take. There’s way more than beautiful beaches — Malta boasts an awesome range of English classes. You’ll find all styles to suit your needs. I’ve spoken with students who tried each course — here’s a quick summary:

1. General English

The staple course everyone knows. It’s your traditional setup: lessons in all main skills: speaking, reading, writing, listening. Usually super interactive — role plays, lots of group chat, and communicative activities. At the Institute of English Language Studies, for example, lessons are all about real-life communication, no matter if you start at pre-intermediate or you’re already flexing those advanced modal verbs.

2. Intensive English

Perfect for those looking to improve rapidly. Think ‘general English plus’ — longer hours, fewer classmates (sometimes 6–8 at Maltalingua or Berlitz). Expect more homework and less time lounging on the beach, but the trade-off is crazy progress in just a couple of weeks. My friend did this; she called it a ‘language marathon,’ but totally worth it.

3. English Exam Prep Courses

If you need an actual certificate (maybe for uni applications or a job), these courses are super focused. Schools like IELS and Malta University Language School run these — essay timing drills, speaking practice exams, and intensive reading included. Everyone I know who took one got a much better score on their second try. Guess who’s teaching these? Teachers with serious creds — think CELTA or DELTA qualified.

4. Professional English

If business meetings in English make you sweat, this is where you go. Classes are small — usually 6–8 students (check IELS, Maltalingua and BELS) — and focus on emails, presentations, and professional chit-chat. There’s also the bonus of networking across industries with your peers. I met a Brazilian student finalizing business deals over Zoom from his Maltese flat after just weeks.

5. Specialized and Professional English

EC Malta specializes in fast, targeted programs for teachers: think 1–2 week communication and methodology sprints. IELS makes it more specific, running English sessions for sectors like healthcare, tourism, and beyond. These are great for job-specific vocab, and they give you a qualification that actually counts.

6. Individual English Tutoring

Not everyone wants to hang out in a group. Individual lessons totally adjust to your level, goals, and any tricky points. Yes, it’s pricier (about €40–60/hour at Maltalingua and IELS), but you’ll have a coach focused solely on you. Perfect if you’re a bit introverted or want to fix a particular accent.

Bonus: schools often let you blend general English with afternoon business or private sessions. It’s easy to arrange a flexible schedule, ideal for squeezing in sightseeing after your lessons.

Leading English language schools in Malta

This is where things get interesting, because every school has its rep and personality. I’m often asked, "Which one’s best?" or "Are classes just tourists staring at slides?" So, here’s a rundown of the main schools — plus a peek at what they’re really like:

Institution
What’s it like?

Institute of English Language Stuadies (IELS)

• High academic standards; certified CELTA/DELTA staff

• Teacher Trainig courses

• Structured, but also lively!

Malta University Language School

• Strong academic rep; CELTA/DELTA teachers

• Official Malta university certification

• Academic, but social!

Maltalingua

• Geared for adults, small class sizes

• Rooftop terrace, pool parties

• Easygoing, welcoming, modern vibe

EC Malta

• Big franchise, packed activity calendar

• Culture trips, focus on boosting confidence

• Slick and international

BELS Malta & Gozo

• Test prep and business English

• Youth options, visa assistance

• Relaxed, welcoming, many coming back

Berlitz Malta

• Renowned Berlitz system

• Group and solo options, chat-based

• Perfect for busy professionals

It all boils down to the vibe you want and your learning aims. Think: strict studies, or more relaxed, sunshine and social? Will you stay short term, or are you eyeing a long stay and those school discounts?

"Thought it was just a three-week holiday class — ended up staying six months and making friends from all over. My English and social circle exploded!"

— Viktoria, Prague (still checks in with Malta selfies)

How big are classes and how do they teach?

Group size counts for more than you’d think. As someone who can’t stand big, shouty groups, I was honestly shocked how small and chill the classes are in Malta compared to, say, language courses in big cities.

Here are the typical setups:

Standard English Classes typically have 10 to 15 students, so everyone gets a turn, and no one can hide in the background!

Professional English / Exam courses Super tiny groups — think 4–6 students. You'll get lots of personal help, fast improvement, and very little waiting around.

1-to-1 Lessons Solo sessions with a teacher: full-on, yet incredibly worthwhile.

Teachers here? Yeah, they’re not just "native speakers" — these folks are certified (CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, you name it) and actually care about your progress. Also, classroom vibes are centered on talking and real-world language. I remember spending a session on mock job interviews — awkward in the moment, but incredibly practical for real life.

If, like me, you dislike tests but thrive on friendly rivalry, you'll find games, debates, role-play, baking, and even cooking in some classrooms.

Learning beyond the classroom: immersion & fun

Honestly, English in Malta is as much outside class as in it. One word: immersion. I always thought "cultural program" was code for one offbeat museum and then back to the classroom. Not here! Imagine: morning classes, then grilling at the beach in Sliema with Italians, Russians, Germans — all chatting in English.

You’ll find school events from Valletta walks to Comino island tours, karaoke nights, film evenings, and language swaps. My top memory: totally wiping out in a Maltese folk dance class — everyone just laughed, but I actually got all the jokes (language success!).

And outside of official school stuff, Malta’s just ridiculously easy for practicing English. Conversation happens everywhere: cafes, markets, bookstores. Sometimes, older ladies in stores will help fix your pronunciation if they see you’re studying.

Here’s what you just can’t get from an online course:

Ordering rabbit dish at a traditional spot (give it a shot!)
Crumbling with laughter during a pub trivia night with friends from school
Joining a spontaneous festival and belting out English lyrics (with questionable pitch)

And because everything’s close, you’re never missing out. Study, swim, explore, repeat — without even needing a car. That’s real immersion, and that’s where the magic happens.

Where to stay as a language student in Malta

You’ve found the perfect language course and selected a school, but then comes the next big question — where are you staying? This choice shapes your whole trip, impacting your friendships with fellow students, your local connections, and everyday life in Malta.

Choosing a host family in Malta

This is classic. Staying with a Maltese family means you’ll eat local food (expect lots of fresh bread, tomatoes, and crazy-good pastizzi), experience daily life, and talk, talk, talk — all in English, from breakfast to dinner.

From what I’ve heard, and based on what an Italian friend told me, you kinda get a bonus grandma looking out for you — and correcting all your "th" sounds at the kitchen table. It’s hands-down the best way to pick up casual phrases and hear the "real" Maltese rhythm of speech. Most schools hook you up with host families that match your preferences — vegetarian? Allergies? They sort it.

Student residences & apartment shares

If you want to do your own thing, go for a student residence. It’s like dorm life, but with way better views. You’ll share space with students from all over the globe — French, Japanese, Brazilian — and discover how to work the shower, while debating whose food is missing.

Biggest perk? Loads of social life: impromptu study groups, movie nights, a willing swim partner, and constant English chatter — even during kitchen squabbles.

Choosing a private apartment

Some students — especially professionals or those who like privacy — prefer their own apartment. Yes, it’s pricier, but you get to live like a local: market shopping, hosting guests, and feeling like Malta is really "your" city. Opt for this if you’re taking an extended course (BELS has long-term deals) and want independence.

Accommodation
Suited for
Feel
Estimated weekly rate*

Family accommodation
Immersion lovers, younger students
Shared family dinners, cultural tips, non-stop talking
200–300 EUR

Shared accommodation
Sociable types, those on a budget
International housemates, events, shared cooking
€150-€250

Private apartment
Those who want privacy or longer stays
Autonomous living, fully local, flexible rules
€250–€450

*Rates fluctuate seasonally — summer is peak price, winter brings bargains.

What’s a student’s day like in Malta?

Excited for Malta? Here’s a typical action-packed day, based on what students (and honestly, me on a test run) squeeze into a day of studying, exploring, and fun:

8:00 – Morning starts with church bells and salty air. Sip espresso, either with your host family or in the shared kitchen.
9:00 – 12:30 – Study sessions: doing drills, chatting in groups, practicing presentations or prepping for a test.
12:30 – 14:00 – Lunch break with classmates. Sooner or later, you converge at a café, order a ftira, and nail English at the counter.
14:00 – 16:00 – Hit the beach or join a workshop (test tricks, local lingo lessons, sometimes salsa dancing at BELS).
16:00 – 18:00 – More lessons for intensive learners, or get your assignments done (chilling in a plaza with ice cream is a plus).
19:00 – Dinner and good company. Either with your host family, sharing a meal in the residence, or dining out with friends in Valletta.
20:00 – 23:00 – Evening fun: city walking tour, trivia night, party on a boat, or sunset on a rooftop — group chat blows up with new plans.

Craziest bit? Every activity is a lesson in disguise — you’re constantly speaking and listening in English, barely realizing you’re learning.

Visa and paperwork guidance

Getting a visa sounds daunting, but Malta handles it well for language students. If you’re from the EU/EEA, you often don’t need one (short stays). Non-EU? You’ll apply for a student visa if you’re staying more than 90 days.

Good news? IELS, BELS, EC, and Maltalingua, among others, offer visa support through their student services. You basically get a checklist, help with documents, and a formal acceptance letter — so no freaking out in front of a consulate window. Tip: Confirm visa regulations before you go (post-Brexit updates come fast for UK and Irish travelers).

Student stories: real reviews

Trust me, I’m not alone: everyone I met was pretty passionate about their Malta experience. Here’s a random sampling, and yeah — some of these are from ex-classmates now scattered across Europe, still texting me memes in English:

"I’d already tried learning English in other countries twice, but Malta was on another level. After only weeks at IELS, my confidence shot up and I actually made friends outside my comfort zone. No joke, we’re already organizing a reunion!"
— Paola, Italy

"Studying business English at BELS Gozo boosted my skills fast. The teachers were so supportive — they personalized lessons to my job, we did role-plays, and I even improved my CV with their help."
— Andreas, Germany

"I thought I’d feel old as a 35-year-old going to Malta for a course. Nope! Met peers from finance, tech, medicine — the mix is awesome. Now we all LinkedIn each other and swap ideas in English every week."
— Clare, France

Everyone agrees on one thing: there’s something magic about how fast you level up when you’re living, not just learning.

What to be aware of

Here’s the honest truth — Malta rocks, but you need to watch for a few hiccups.

Mid-summer is intense — if you don’t book early, you could be sharing with way too many people. Trust me, it happens.
Nightlife lovers — Paceville is wild, but if you value sleep, try Sliema, St Julians, or Gozo for quieter evenings.
Cheap courses can mean big class sizes — ask for group size details and read real reviews before you pay.
Weather’s amazing most of the time, though Jan-Feb gets surprisingly chilly and windy for the Med — pack a warm jacket for winter courses.

Remember: WiFi isn’t always perfect. If remote work’s on your agenda, vet your internet options. I’ve had video calls drop mid-sentence — lesson learned.

Cost breakdown: what to budget for English courses in Malta

Expense type
Usual weekly price

General English course
€210-300

Intensive class add-on
additional €70-€150

English for business
€250–€400

Host family
€200–€300

Student accommodation
150–250 euros

Rental flat
€300–€450

Food
€50–100

Weekly public transit
€21 (tallinja card, unlimited rides)

Entrance tickets, museum/cultural
€5-15

Going out/entertainment
€20-60

Overall, daily costs are pretty manageable.
